Nato came to Finland to become a new stud dog for kennel Canine, owned by Hannele Tammivuori. Unfortunately we were to notice at a quite an early stage the weaknesses in his conformation. That was the end of his career as a stud dog. Actually the end came before the whole career had even started…
Of my opinion Nato joined our pack for some whole other reasons than to become what was planned for him. There is definitely some higher meaning behind. Nato is practically a perfect copy of our Hovawart ‘Hemmo’ – except Nato has shorter hair :o. Nato has been our teacher in many ways. Thanks to Nato I managed to actualize my long-term dream; I applied to study animal physiotherapy.
Now after three knee operations there is a light in the tunnel. Greatest thanks to the vet Jan Räihä for everything!
Hitherto we have let Nato work as an all-round hunting dog and let him do things in his own style – naturally not that much hunting as one could hope because yoounger he has been well only short periods of time. Fortunately we haven’t done any bigger mistakes with him and he shows every now and then how the real gun dogs work.

Nato is our daughters’ best friend. Nato is “melting” when playing with our girls. He is patient and his big warm heart gives comfort when the girls have their moments and need a shoulder to lean on. Their friendship is touching.

There was a time when we had strong doubts about Nato’s ability to point even though he has dogs with very good hunting abilities in his pedigree. He liked to flush the birds and even go after … :o) But never say never. In one autumn day he was all of the sudden standing stiffly - "He’s pointing"! Of course this happened when I was training him on my own and didn’t have the permission to carry a shotgun at that stage. Luckily I had taken my camera with me … nobody at home wouldn’t have believed it had they not seen “the evidence” on my camera :o) The only thing I could do was to reward Nato with all the possible praise words. He was also all confused about this episode and didn’t even try to run after the bird.
First point
A beloved child has many names, ”Naatushka or Tushka” are probably the most used names for Nato. At some point somebody sayed that “you cannot have everything” – yes – that would have been too good to be true I guess :o).
